Before You Accept a New Chat: Profiles, Requests and Boundaries

Older versions of this guide described a particular random-match preview. Interfaces change, and a preview, accept or skip control should only be relied on when it is actually available in the current app. These practical checks apply when someone new wants to chat, whether the introduction comes from a group, a profile or discovery.

Read the context before responding

Look at how the person found you and whether you share a group or interest. A public profile, display name or picture is a starting point, not proof of identity. If the message refers to something you have never discussed, ask a simple question rather than filling in the gaps yourself.

Use the controls that are present

Read the current request or conversation screen. Some services offer a preview and accept or decline buttons; others open a conversation directly. Do not assume an older screenshot describes your device. Use the back, block, report or leave options provided by the current app when a conversation is unwanted.

Keep a first exchange limited

Begin with the topic that brought you together. Keep your home address, workplace, recovery phrase, passwords and financial details out of the exchange. A person does not need your recovery phrase to add you, verify your account or join a conversation.

Treat links and invitations as separate decisions

An invitation may lead to a different site, group or application. Check its destination and who sent it before signing in or sharing a file. Being in the same group does not automatically make someone a trusted recipient for your information.

Move to a call only by agreement

Text can give you time to decide whether you want a voice or video call. Both people should agree to the change. You can stop or decline without providing a personal explanation. Contact support if a feature behaves differently from the current instructions, and use the reporting controls for unwanted conduct.
